Four Hours of Your Time = Big Change for Houston’s Literacy Community

More than 150 PMI Houston members will donate their time and expertise to help 50 area nonprofits working on literacy during the upcoming Ready for Reading: Project Management Day of Service. This impactful and innovative service event for project managers is being held on Sunday, October 18 (1-5pm) at the University of St. Thomas, in conjunction with Points of Light’s annual Conference and Volunteering and Service, a national event bringing together thousands of nonprofit leaders.

During this marathon-style service event sponsored by HP, project managers will provide speed consulting to nonprofit leaders, with the end result being a well-defined scope of work and project plan that nonprofits can then use to address specific challenges. Project managers cut across industries but are less common in the nonprofit world, often due to a lack of resources. Through Ready for Reading, volunteers will contribute over 600 hours of direct service to area nonprofits, making a collective contribution of nearly $100,000 worth of business consulting in a single day,” says Georgia Gillette, leader of A Billion + Change – Points of Light’s national campaign dedicated to pro bono service.

While transformative for nonprofits, the chance to use project management skills for good can be transformative for participating volunteers as well. A participant of a similar event held in Washington, DC earlier this year, said, “I would want other PMs to know that even in a short period of time, your skills are valuable to nonprofits and that it’s meaningful and worthwhile. It gives a sense of worth to your profession.”

“This is our chance to show the Houston business community and local nonprofits that project managers are change agents. Our professional skills can be game-changing for nonprofits, and we’re thrilled to have an opportunity to connect our work to our community” says Amy Stonesifer, VP of Membership for PMI Houston.

To learn more and register to participate, visit http://www.abillionpluschange.org/events/ready-reading-project-management-day-service.   Want to volunteer with others from your company? You can register as a team! You will be one of three project managers assigned to a nonprofit with a challenge.  MD Anderson has already committed 10 people. This is a great chance for a group service project.  Volunteers will be asked to take part in a 1-hour web training to get you prepared (date TBD in September).  Registration is limited, so sign up soon!
